A washer and dryer combo is a single appliance that does both functions. That’s right; you put your clothes in, push a few buttons, and later in the day you take dry, clean clothes out of the same washer and dryer combo door.

How is this possible? Because the washer and dryer combo is ventless. Instead of circulating air that is heated up and then expelled through a vent, it uses a technology to remove the water from the air and send it out the same hose as the used wash water. In this way the washer and dryer combo does not need an exhaust vent. That’s how a single unit can do both functions.

As with any appliance, the washer and dryer combo has both advantages and disadvantages.

Pros to a washer and dryer combo unit:

It Takes up Less Space
This can be especially important if you live in an apartment or anywhere that doesn’t let you fit in a traditional washer and dryer.

No Vent Needed
You may live in a place where it is impossible to cut a hole in the wall for a vent. For this reason a washer and dryer combo is the only way to allow you to do laundry from the convenience of your home.

Energy Efficient
The energy required to dry your clothes through condensation in a washer and dryer combo is much less than the traditional method of heating up and circulating air.

Water Efficient
This is actually true about any front-end loading washer as well. Instead of floating your clothes in a large amount of water, it tumbles them in a small amount. Believe it or not, your clothes still come out clean, but a washer and dryer combo uses a lot less water than a traditional appliance.

Cons to a washer and dryer combo unit:

It Takes a Long Time to do a Full Cycle
From the time you put your clothes into a washer and dryer combo to the time you remove them, you’re looking at about 4 hours depending on the cycle. But since you’re in your own home, you don’t have to stand around and watch them the way you would at a laundromat, so you probably won’t even notice the amount of time it takes.

Dryer can’t Handle Large Loads
Although the washer can usually process a decent sized load, the dryer can’t always handle it and still get the clothes dry.

Expensive
These washer and dryer combo units tend to be a little on the pricey side. But they pay for themselves in a few years from the cost savings of not having to plunk quarters down at the laundromat.

Excess Vibration
This is actually a disadvantage of many of the front end loaders. One way they dry clothes efficiently is to remove a large amount of water through a very strong spinning action; stronger than traditional washers and dryers. As a result, they have a lot of vibration.

If you can, try to locate your washer and dryer combo on a first floor, or better yet on a cement floor. Or look for a low vibration model of washer and dryer combo.

One of the most amazing breakthroughs in technology is an appliance that is both a washer and dryer in one. Now this doesn’t mean two separate units that just happen to be housed together into the same body, like something stackable.

With today’s modern technology, washer and dryer in one means that a single appliance does both of these functions.

At one point in the not-so-distant past, this would have been unheard of. But these are the days of iPhones and flat screen tvs. Nothing is impossible.

Before explaining how a washer and dryer in one works, here’s a little review of the old fashioned method.

Most people have two separate appliances. The one that washes your clothes attaches to your water input. And the rinse water goes out through a pipe that feeds into your waste water drain.

The other appliance dries your clothes by sucking in air from the surrounding environment and heating it, then circulating your clothes through the hot air. It keeps the air moving and always dry & hot by blowing the used and moist air out a vent and starting the whole process again.

A washer and dryer in one does two things differently. It is meant to be used by people in apartments or houses where they do not have access to a vent to expel the used dryer air or water input and waste water drains.

The unit can usually attach to an ordinary sink faucet. And the used water drain can also be put into the sink so that the water just flows out down the drain. Simple.

But the other, rather extraordinary, thing that a washer and dryer in one does differently is how it dries your clothes.

Rather than using heating new air and then blowing it out a vent, it actually recirculates the same air over and over. You may be wondering how it then dries anything if the same wet air is used?

The washer and dryer in one has technology (condensation) to sap the moistness from the air, turn it back into water, and expel it out the same drain pipe that the water from the washing cycle put out.

Does it dry your clothes as well as a traditional unit? No. The recycled air is never going to dry clothes as well as fresh, hot air. But there are quite a few advantages to using a washer and dryer in one.

It uses less energy to condense the moisture out of the air than to heat fresh air. Less energy means (cha-ching) a bigger cost savings.

A washer and dryer in one takes up less space. A single appliance is a lot easier to find space for than two big, clunky units.

If you live in a place where drilling a big hole in the wall for a vent is out-of-the-question, a washer and dryer in one is a definite advantage to having none at all and having to spend your free time waiting for the cycle to finish at a local laundromat.

If you live in a small apartment or even a house with limited space, you may be ready for a washer dryer combo unit. When most people use the term "washer dryer combo unit" they may mean two different things.

Stackable Units
This is a washer dryer combo unit that is one on top of the other. It’s great for houses where you have limited space. We had one of these units in a little laundry closet on our upper floor. It fit in great.

The washer is always on the bottom because it is heaviest with its huge drum. The dryer tends to be lighter and is always on the top.

We had a little folding door with fake stained glass in it to hide the closet when the washer dryer combo unit was not in use.

All-in-One Units
This is the more modern definition of a washer dryer combo unit. It is actually a single appliance that does both.

The main reason for getting one of these isn’t so much the space-savings; it is because no external vent is needed. So people who live in apartments and can’t necessarily cut holes in their walls can get one of these washer dryer combo unit sets and still be able to do laundry at home.

Anyone who has lived in the city and taken hours of their free time to do laundry knows what a benefit this is. Besides the fact that you have to schlep a heavy bag of clothes down to the local laundromat, a bigger downside is that you have to take hours to do a load. Most people don’t feel comfortable leaving their clothes unattended in a public place, so there’s a lot of waiting around with a book or magazine.

But with a washer dryer combo unit in your own home, those days are over.

The down side of one of these types of sets is that it takes a really long time to do a load of clothes; between 3 and 5 hours. But you can set it going and then go off and do other things.

How is it possible that this type of washer dryer combo unit doesn’t need a vent? Because it uses the same air to dry the clothes instead of having new air flowing through it. It does this by removing the water from the air using a condensation technique. Then it disposes of the water through its wash water outflow pipe.

Yes, you do still need to be able to hook water up to it, but many of these types of washer dryer combo unit can attach directly to any household sink. And the waste water pipe can be put into the sink as well so the water just flows away; no special drain needed.

Also, they can plug into a normal outlet. A traditional dryer, in contrast, needs a special plug.

So anyone that has space next to a sink with access to an outlet can easily put a washer dryer combo unit into their home.

The term washer dryer combination can mean different things to different people.

Some think of a washer dryer combination as meaning two separate units that are the same color and style.

It can also mean a separate washer and dryer built into a single unit stacked one on top of the other. This is useful for people with limited space. If you only have room in a closet or alcove, having a stacked unit like that makes sense.

But that latest meaning of washer dryer combination is truly a remarkable feat of engineering; both a washer and dryer in a single unit. That's right; one door, one chamber, one appliance, if you will, but two completely different functions.

How do the latest washer dryer combination appliances work?

First your clothes are washed in a pretty traditional way. The spin cycle is usually more robust to extract as much water as possible.

But the amazing part is when it comes time to dry them. It circulates hot air throughout the chamber as a traditional dryer would. But it doesn't heat the air in the traditional way.

Instead it uses a condensation method. This means that the dryer uses a heat exchanger which removes water vapor from the air and condenses it into liquid, which can flow out the same tube as the excess wash water. Then it recirculates the same air through the chamber.

One advantage of this type of water dryer combination is you do not need any external vent through which to blow the hot air out. This makes it extremely appealing to people in an apartment that aren't able to cut holes through their walls.

And most of these washer dryer combination units can be hooked up to a regular sink faucet. The run off water can also flow into the sink and down the drain, so no special hookup of any kind is needed.

Do these new-fangled water dryer combination sets clean and dry as well as their traditional counterparts?

The evidence seems to point to no.

The recirculated air tends to have more humidity in it than the heated air in a standard unit. So your clothes do dry, but they tend to still feel a little damp. Once you remove them and the air has a chance to dissipate, they are ok.

Another downside of the recirculated air of the washer dryer combination is that your clothes get more wrinkles than they would with a traditional set.

But if you are in a limited living situation and it's a choice between none at all and a washer dryer combination, the cons of it do not outweigh the benefits of being able to do your laundry in your own house without plunking quarters into somebody else's pocket.

Most water dryer combination units pay for themselves in 3 or 4 years.

And besides the cost savings, it's so nice to be able to do laundry while you do other things around your apartment rather than having to spend hours with a book at a laundromat.

All-in-all, a washer dryer combination is an appliance you'll be happy you have.
